As everybody knows Hayman Island is now part of the prestigious brand One & Only. Located in the Whitsundays, this luxury resort is one of the top luxury places to stay in Queensland.
A little touch of paradise from Australia ? Oh yes, it makes no doubt that Hayman is the perfect place to escape from your busy life.
09h30am, the helicopter is waiting for us on the Hamilton Island helipad. Hayman is the most northerly island of the Whitsundays archipelago and the flight time is 15 minutes from Hamilton. When the weather conditions are perfect and they are most of the time, this flight is more than a transfer, it is an amazing scenic flight above the islands offering a luxuriant nature, stunning beaches, blue clear water with corals. I just can’t wait to land to go for a swim. If you are lucky, you can even easily see from the helicopter some turtles are sting rays.
Hayman is not far now and the more the helicopter approaches the resort the more you think you did the right choice. The lagoon front of the resort is calm and clear and you know what ? At low tide you can walk all the way to the coral fringe to enjoy amazing snorkelling.
At your arrival, the little buggy is waiting for you to take you to the lobby. It is not even 10 am, the room is not ready yet but don’t get upset, just go to the main restaurant and have breakfast. The buffet is full of fresh food (fruit, cheese, nice bread, juices, homemade yogurts, order your eggs etc.) and for the ‘chic’ touch, there is even some French champagne ! Help yourself, you are on Hayman, choose a table outside front of the beach and just enjoy the scenery.
The resort has 2 wings: The Pool wing where some rooms have direct access to the large salted water pool. All the suites are absolutely well appointed and spacious which is good to point out because on holidays, you need some space ! The Hayman wing is more family friendly with its brand new pool perfect for kids. Still on the Hayman wing, you can’t ignore the new restaurant Aquazure specialized in tapas. The atmosphere is very contemporary and trendy but also relax without any special dress code required to make sure everybody feels happy and welcome.
When your room is ready, please follow your guide who will take you to your suite. Time to put your shorts and tongs on ! The air conditioning is not too cold, I have a pillow menu on my bed with a selection of five of them, the balcony is super large with a big day bed which looks perfect to take a nap, the bathroom is spacious and in the lounge, there is a huge flat TV screen on the wall that I will not turn it on because I don’t need it here. The Wi fi works pretty well which is quite a challenge when you think where you are.
Time to go for a swim. At the pool, the staff is friendly, the towels are large, thick and they all look brand new. If you really want to treat yourself, book one of the beach/pool cabanas. For 250 aud a day, it is like having your own private little shack for the day. In the price, please don’t forget that champagne and canapés are included. For lunch ? Let’s try the Aquazure ! Lounge music with Thievery Corporation coming out from the speakers, the waitress in young and happy to work for Hayman. My suggestion is to try the soft shell crab and the grilled fish just to remind you that fish and seafood are excellent in Australia. There are 5 restaurants on Hayman: It goes from a yummy pizza at the’ Amici’ to the fine dining restaurant ‘Fire’ which is just amazing. It is not cheap, a Darling Downs Beef (450 g) will cost you 150 dollars but don’t panic because having Italian food at the Amici or Asian food at the Bamboo, is reasonably affordable.
If you scare to get bored in the afternoon, don’t worry I have to ideas for you. The resort offers a large range of activities and many of them and complimentary: Water sports (kayaking, paddling, windsurfing etc.), hiking, yoga, fitness, bird walk, sand flats tour at low tide, feeding the fish, garden tour, wallaby spotting, water skiing, jet ski Adventure, golf, tennis etc. and if you want to get pampered, pick up your phone, call the butler and book a spa treatment. Hayman also never forgets the kids ! They have their own space on the Island with a kids club and a teens club to escape from the parents ! Both of them are complimentary. If you choose Hayman for your honeymoon, please choose on the beach Villa located obviously on the beach wing with a direct access to the … beach. Spacious, with or without a private pool and plenty of privacy, it is 2000 aud a night but what 2000 aud are in a lifetime especially to celebrate your honeymoon?
Don’t miss the sunset on the beach please, look at the orange / pink colour of the sky and listen to all the birds as if they were singing a song to all the guest. Before dinner, have a pre-dinner drink at Bar Fifty and have a little play at the schooner table. It is dark now outside, it is time to go back to the room, on the way, you may see one of these cute and friendly possum or even a wallaby because you are in Australia ! Sweet dreams.
6 am, it’s already 25 degrees outside and the sun shines like ever. Perfect morning to go and explore one of these hidden secrets of the island. Do you know Blue Pearl Bay ? It is right behind the island. Few minutes by boat and you will not believe where you are. Welcome to this secluded little beach for snorkelling with a kaleidoscope of fish in crystal clear waters. Back to the resort, I have time for an ultimate swim in the pool. Check out at 11 am, the little buggy takes me to the marina where a luxury yacht is waiting for the guests to take them back to Hamilton Island marina. One again, this cruise is more an experience than a transfer. On board, you will be served some champagne. It is a one hour trip to Hamilton but half way, most of the passengers are asleep lying on big sofas, just a way to say how it feels good to have spent few days on Hayman.
